The Youth House of the Vasileostrovsky District hosted a highly successful New Year’s concert of the second season, “Fairy Tales in Russian Opera.” Accompanied by the orchestra of the Saint Petersburg State Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory under Miras Nurzhanov, the program featured excerpts from Russian operas previously performed in the second season. On stage, the wicked sisters of the young queen and the matchmaker from Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Tale of Tsar Saltan schemed and tried to enchant the Tsar. A Chinese student team of the conservatory presented the blind young daughter of the king and the Eastern interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta. The scene from S.P. Banevich’s The Story of Kai and Gerda was deeply touching and truly moving. The young performers’ acting, musicality, and sense of humor in the scene from Prokofiev’s Love for Three Oranges not only defeated the prince’s hypochondria but also delighted the audience. The cook and Truffaldino were unforgettable. Costumes and makeup, created by students of the University of Industrial Technologies and Design, looked stunning against the backdrop of black velvet curtains. The audience applauded warmly; the magical transformations of the New Year’s evening brought love and kindness triumphing over evil and warmed the hearts of the spectators.
